County Court at Law 2 Judge Claudia Laird has a concealed handgun license and it was recently announced that she has signed her employees up for training to receive their permits, as well. Judge Laird explained the action was taken in order to keep her personnel and staff members safe due to their positions.

James B. Towle, host of ATSN’s “Stop the Threat,” is a Second Amendment advocate, shooting competitor, and has worked in the security and law enforcement community for 25 years. He may best be known for augmenting the Secret Service on President Reagan’s California ranch before he became president of the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s council. “Stop the Threat” is a round-table discussion with other professionals in the field that offers insight into specific crime situations and whether to “draw or retreat”.

In response to Montgomery County officials under Judge Laird receiving their CHL, Towle echoed Precinct 3 Commissioner James Noack in saying that the judge knows what security arrangements are necessary to keep her and her staff safe.

“Many agencies and businesses are moving in a similar direction,” Towle said. “We hear of schools, companies, and now the courts wanting to train staff for a CHL. My only caveat would be that there needs to be a mandatory training schedule after the CHL is issued.”

Towle wanted to remind community members who may be visiting the court houses and other offices where employees who have a CHL work that in Texas you don’t need a CHL to legally carry a gun in your car or hotel room. Also, one need not to be alarmed when considering that Judge Laird’s staff would be armed because “you’re entering a courthouse – there are armed men and women everywhere.”

But just because one has CHL does not mean they should always draw their weapons in hostile situations without a vigilant understanding of when to draw and when to be the best witness for law enforcement.

“They work in a courthouse where people of different persuasions may collide more often,” Towle said. “They should be training on a regular schedule with an instructor, not only to improve their ability with the gun but to review their ability to make a “Draw or Retreat” decision. Classes should be held and techniques discussed to include any scenario that may happen in the court house whether it’s a fire, a hurricane or active shooter.”
